Wisdom of Winners

I didn’t really know what to expect when I attended this event because I just wanted to help out my mom since the organization, Rotary Club of Cebu Fuente that she is a part of is spearheading the event. It was the 2nd New Generation Web Conference and the theme that they had was Wisdom of Winners. And I just found out on the event that they chose Cebu speakers who are successful in their specific field. And later on, I realized that this conference wasn’t only going on in Cebu but everywhere else in the nation like Makati, Gen San and wherever there is a Rotary Chapter.

The first speaker was Edmun Liu. He was chosen for his success in the graphic printing industry. He founded Basic Graphics.

He shared the 3 truths that he created in becoming successful.

1. EVERYTHING STARTS WITH YOU – He cited an example such as the pond and coin. If you look at a pond, it remains stagnant but once you throw a coin to that pond, it creates ripples. Be that coin and those ripples, let them be your influence. Know yourself. Accept who you are. Know your limits and strengths. And remember always, get your life in order and everything else will follow.

2. GOT TO KNOW WHERE YOU ARE GOING – stay focus on the target. Make a plan to achieve that goal.

3. FIND THE RIGHT PARTNERS – no one can do it alone. Invest in yourself with the best mentors. Be the best version of yourself. Don’t let PRIDE blind you. Be OPEN. Win the love and respect of your family. Gain FAITH that is strong enough to move mountains.

As a final advice from him, you should welcome the sun light of every new day to make your mark.

The next speaker is Anya Lim who has become successful in the social and green enterprise. She is also the co-founder of Anthill Fabrics Gallery. Here in this photo, she showcases one of the dresses created by Lord Maturan. And would you believe that the fabric that was used to create this dress is handwoven here in the Philippines.

She has always had this passion for our Philippine Culture and she decided to apply that passion through the family business which is fabrics. One of her goals with Anthill is to revive the dying weaving community of the Philippines.

Here is one of the recent projects that Anthill has done. In collaboration with Rags2Riches (R2R) and one of most successful designers in the Philippines, Rajo Laurel, they created the Tree Bag Project. There are three Filipino communities that helped create this bag from the handle, the fabric down to the  carved wooden buttons. This is truly a proud product made in the Philippines.

Dondon Hontiveros, a winner through sports

It was really amazing watching the AVP about how he started and where he came from. He really fought for his dream and the best advice that he has given was that no matter how many achievements you get, always remember to be humble.

Matteo Guidicelli,

who is recently gaining popularity in Showbiz after he has been chosen as one of the actors of a Primetime Soap, Agua Bendita.

I was really amazed by his presentation because he kept on speaking in the Visayan Language showing that he is proud to be a Cebuano. And it was entertaining to see girls going insane over him like one girl looked like she was in the process of an exorcism. It was so funny. Remember, it looks great to be a celebrity but there are consequences.

I really support the advice that he has given.

“There are no shortcuts to the greatest success in life”

Last but not least, Jude Bacalso. She was chosen for being a winner of the Third Gender.

She was really inspiring concerning about Gender Sensitivity and everything about respecting each other.

The best advice that she gave was,

When somebody would go to the lengths of changing their appearance from a boy to a girl or a girl to the boy,

please show them a decency of calling them Sir and Ma’am.

I really hoped that you learned something from this post because I did.

N. Profiles – Anney Lorraine Uy

I am really thankful to Gillian Stephanie Uang for introducing me to Anney Uy.

She is definitely one of the most charming photographers I have met and she is one of the first official photographers of the -neil felipp- jewelry.

You can easily tell if it is an Anney Uy photo with her trademark hair swish.

-Anney Uy (in her own words)-

She’s a simple girl who loves God and exudes an artistic soul.

-The story behind her photography-

Art has always been a part of my life ever since I was young. I drew, drew and drew so much and never got tired of it! However at some point I realized my skill wasn’t enough to deliver the concepts I had in mind. There’s this online art community called deviantArt which I’ve been part of for years. I’ve switched mediums since then and was inspired to try photography. So for my 18th birthday, I received my first and only DSLR which I am still using now, a Canon 350D.

At first I’d just photograph simple day-to-day views and most often my two cute poodle pups. Eventually I got to join the Cebu Digital Photographers club and in one of the activities, met Alandia, who became my first ever model. Another mark was the shoot Mara Mejos, Lea Duhaylungsod and I had with Karina Gajudo, Blinky de Leon, Dania Bercede and Fretzie Bercede which is still one of my most memorable shoots. It’s there that I started to really enjoy the art and workflow of shooting people and delivering the photos in a preferably deviant, creative way. Ever since then I’ve continued my photostories, which are also my personal works for my portfolio.

-Dream Project-

I know this might sound so out-of-reach but yes, dreams are free, right? I’d love to be able to shoot for big brands like Gucci, Prada, Vivienne Westwood, Miu Miu and the likes someday. Predictably. However, I’d already be happy if I could go major and all-out on my own concepts. You know the song Fireflies by Owl City? I have something really big in mind inspired from the song but it’s a secret for now. Maybe in a few years I’d get to show everyone. 🙂

-Her Personal style and how she developed it-

I used to dress really casual most of the time when I was younger and I absolutely hated dresses! I was comfortable in jumpers and big shirts. Ironically though I absolutely love wearing dresses now, especially the casual ones you can just slip on to when you’re in a rush. I play up on a sleeveless knee-length dress, cardigan, necklace and cute sandals. But bottom line, I can be rugged or girly depending on my mood. I lean more to classical simple pieces more than the loud over-cut ones.

-Fashion Icons-

I don’t really have a particular fashion icon but I do love Michelle Phan’s sense of style. She’s actually more of a make-up artist but whenever she posts her outfits for the day on twitter I usually really love them! So chic but at the same time edgy. Aside from that I honestly don’t know who else to choose since I usually just mix and match my own outfits. Haha!

-If you were given the chance to exchange places with someone-

Hmmm… This is difficult. I guess it would be John William Waterhouse. In a female form, of course, since I love being a girl too much. Haha! I absolutely love his soul and vision. His paintings speak to me so much and it would be awesome to be able to be in his shoes and just paint straight and clear the visions he sees. Any other old masters can be candidates too. I’m sure everyone can relate to having some form of self-expression (i.e. sports, music) and the reason I chose old masters is because being able to clearly release and mark your feelings into paintings is something truly fulfilling and literally wonderful.

-If given a one way ticket to anywhere-

Europe! I don’t think I need to explain why. Hopefully that ticket includes an extensive tour and free food. Haha

-Advice for the readers based on her life experiences-

Basically, be comfortable with yourself. You don’t have to follow other people’s styles or personas because it’ll only become a downgrade version of yourself. You can experiment with different things whether it be a fashion style or a hobby and eventually you’ll be able to find something you know that is so YOU. Also, values and morals are still very important in life even though the world may tell you otherwise. In the end, it is always the ultimate good to seek for wisdom from God by building a relationship with Him because He knows more about yourself than you do.

Bijoux Gala Show

I decided to get out of the office and do some assisting for one of my mentors, Oj Hofer for the Bijoux Gala Show. And I can’t believe I was able to see this month’s cover girl of Zee Lifestyle, Mia Arcenas who I thought was in Hong Kong.
Congrats Mia once again! 😀

This is the collection that Oj Hofer created for the this year’s Bijoux Gala show. It was inspired by the element of fire because the theme of this year’s Bijoux Show was the elements. I love the beautiful simplicity of the pieces as they compliment the form of the models. And to make the whole look complete, the accessories truly showed the characteristics of fire. I was even amazed by the make-up because they were inspired from the Chinese Opera. Everything was very theatrical.

Here are some of my favorites during the show.

Gown by Arcy Gayatin and accessories by Mia Arcenas for Ferimar

I’m really sorry but I was not able to remember who’s gown is this and the accessories but I was just amazed by Gwen Trott. I really had so much fun talking with her during the night.

The one-and-only Elvira. Corset Gown by Jun Escario and accessories by Avatar.

I was worried for her because it is not easy wearing a corset because you can’t have any deep breathing which means everything has to be shallow. Remember, it is normal if you will faint from wearing a corset.

Gown by Philip Rodriguez and Accessories by Bon Ace

I really want to get this model to shoot for my jewelry one of these days. I love her physical features.

I have forgotten her name but I remembered in the backstage. She has one of the most bubbliest personality that night.

Glamour Run

Photography: Daniel Miranda (a.k.a Queen of England)

Styling by Me

I with Dan hosted the one-of-a-kind GLAMOUR RUN!!! I myself have been participating in runs which has helped me to stay in shape but from all of the runs, I have heard. This one is totally something else. The organizers were from the STC Batch of 88′ or 82′ and to make this an interesting race, there is this 1.6k run for the most glamorous runners hence why I had to dress up a little as one of the host.

Since the run was held at Ayala Terraces, I was so excited when the mall would open because I reserved this book during the 3-day sale. There was another book I wanted to buy but this had more good references for developing my collections.

Remember upcoming designers in whatever field you may be, invest in good books because even if they are a little pricey, they will help you in the future. I assure you that.

.N. loves Zao Resto:Art

So just recently, I have been told by a very good friend of mine, Paolo Ong that there is a new menu at his family’s restaurant, Zao. His restaurant has always been known for a good buffet but I’m always excited for something new in the Ala Carte.

If you people are curious why the restaurant has been called Zao. In greek, Zao actually means “Alive“. The owners have noticed in their travels from Manila to the United States that there are restaurants that are called Zao as well but they only serve Vietnamese. They have been so intrigued by the name that the name is actually from a popular metal band. And finally after getting a dictionary, they discovered the wonderful meaning of the name, Zao, “Alive”.

All of the food that has been served to us has been prepared by the talented, Chef Paolo Ong.

Behind the creation of these delicious dishes, the influence has come from his stay in San Francisco, California when he was studying culinary. Food trips with good friends from the affordable to the expensive but all worth it for the quality so that in his return here to Cebu, Philippines, he would fuse all of these wonderful flavors for the Cebuanos to enjoy.

I have never been a fan of Gambas but with Zao’s own version of Gambas. It is really good. The sauce complimented the shrimp very well and if you put some on the rice, it was a good symphony of flavors and textures.

This is what I ordered, The Suck and Blow. I know that the name of dish is quite erotic  but it is definitely catchy and ingenious. The reason behind the name is it is a Pastel De Lengua (tongue) with mushroom and garlic rice served on a sizzling plate. I asked the chef why they named it that way and that was the only thing that came out of their head.

Paolo, fellow blogger and friend ordered El Guapito.

Grilled Mexican Chicken with Chipotle Mushroom Sauce, Top With Caramelized Onions and Bell Pepper and served with Garlic Rice

A definite must-try.

And for my drink, I ordered a Double Choco Banana Hemp Shake, not only is it healthy but organic.

Paolo, Jaye and me. We were really full and would love to thank Chef Paolo Ong and Zao Restaurant for the delicious lunch.

Zao has become something more than your typical restaurant that serves sizzling, grill and fried but a place for you to unwind and dine.

If you interested to visit Zao and taste their new menu,

Go to Andres Abellana, Cor. Julio Diaz St., Guadalupe, Philippines or you can give them a call, 2543811.

And don’t forget to add them on FACEBOOK.

Bijoux Design Competition and a Canon Case

Recently, family and I went to the Bijoux Show which was held in Shangrila Mactan Island Resort and Spa because we had to pick up a client and check out the show. While we were talking to the client, I couldn’t resist looking at the client’s Camera Casing of their Canon. I asked them where they bought it and they said EBay and only for $20. It is amazing what you can find nowadays in the internet.

Now back to Bijoux, I was happy that I was able to catch up for the Design Competition. I wasn’t looking forward for the Professional Category but the Students Category because some of them are from the University of the Philippines – Cebu, my alma mater.

Here are the top five best designs in the Student Category.

This was one of my favorites. I was really curious of what kind of material this is and to my discovery, it was made out of yarn. Ingenious.

Here are all of the top five designers with their models wearing their beautiful works. And would you believe that all of them are students from the University of the Philippines – Cebu. GO UP CEBU!!! 😀

And here is the winning entry designed by a very good friend of mine, Monica Alcudia. Congratulations Lalat!! I’m really proud of you!!! 😀
